SOOHAN - Trānsmūtō

Accelerating his unique musical style of amalgamating global snippets formulated from a persistent multi cultural appreciation, SOOHAN’s infectious 7th album, named from the Latin trāns- + mūtō (“change, alter”), uniquely splices kitchy American pop music with regional dance and folk music into bass heavy mixes. His sample heavy electronic experiments are clever and entertaining to listen to, as well as catchy and danceable (if ya wanna get up and shake!)

Maneesh de Moor - Icaro

An Icaro (or sonic pattern) is a melody traditionally received by a shaman journeying in the spirit world. The Icaros contained here are contemporary interpretations of Icaros derived from Shipibo tradition, and altered to be played on special flutes, made of Tobacco branch and ancient wood. The recordings are nested amid original field recordings of the Amazon jungle by night and are highlighted by instruments like the ‘Chakapa’, an instrument made of leaves from the ancient Chakapa bush, which provides a very trance-like groove mated to the heart beating rhythms of a shaman’s drum. Superbly done!

Heilung - Futha

Heilung (German for ‘healing’) is known for their striking live performances, complete with leather, and bone outfits, and primitive often homemade instruments. They call their genre Amplified History, which brings the far ancient Northern European past into the present. The atmospheric, sometimes dark, yet delicate, undeniably intense, and primitive style of neo folk that this Danish group plays is sung (and chanted) in multiple Scandinavian languages, which gives it a primal power and
conviction deeper than experienced elsewhere. Authentic and truly unique!

Opeth - In Cauda Venenum  

Delightfully delicious, dynamic and intense musical drama from Sweden’s one and only Opeth! Their 13th release is a double, offering these 10 engaging and enrapturing progressive rock and metal compositions sung first and foremost in Swedish, but then also including with English accompaniment. Every listen unveils new layers of breathtaking delicacy, interesting interludes and amazing musicianship. Bravo!

Babymetal - Metal Galaxy

Nothing short of a fascinating anomaly in the world of music, the chart topping (recently #1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart) Japanese group Babymetal mixes the vocals and choreographed movements of a trio of cutesy teeny bopper type girls with anthemic, super heavy, metal music. This release is a loose concept album about being dispatched to distant parts of the universe. After headlining performances at many prestigious festivals around the world, who knows which part of the universe they will explore next?

voodoohop - Mamazonia : Odes to the Forest - Vol.1

Want to support the front line defenders of the Amazon rain forest? Proceeds from this wonderful compilation of etheric ethno-tronica, put together by the art collective voodoohop, supports two organisations working with indigenous communities in that area. (www.kaninde.org.br/lista-projetos/ & iieb.org.br/projetos-e-programa…/povos-indigenas-2/ ) The tracks are all good, but Xique Xique, Philosamples and Bliz Nochi got more repeats in my ears. 

Shpongle Static - Live at Ozra 2019

If you were wondering if the name meant this was the phenomenal fusion of two visionary musical talents, SHPONGLE (Simon Posford) & EAT STATIC (Merv Pepler), you would be correct! Cross pollinating their globally appealing psychedelic electronic music is certainly a treat and if you were lucky enough to attend this legendary Psychedelic Trance festival in Ozra, Hungary you could have seen it take place in front of your eyes. For the rest of us though, this landmark release will tell the tale of their combined sonic wizardry.

Basher Toe - Pasifika

Tribal dance music has been a favorite of mine for years and this release from Israeli bass producer Basher Toe (aka Chen Beer) is one of the hottest things I have heard in a long while! He spent time studying various ancient pacific cultures, aboriginal music styles, and tribal storytelling techniques, which he then combined with organic samples, hand instruments, and didgeridoos. These elements percolated, blossomed and erupted masterfully within the raw intensity of modern bass music to produce these 5 top notch tracks.
