Eclectic Vibes - September 2015

by Andrew Frey

The summer may have left you with some gurgle and goo, but there’s certainly a pill or an app that will take of that in a jiffy.

ROAD TO SHANGRI LA
My big summer festival finale’ this year will once again be Wookiefoot’s Shagri La. This magical festival which takes place 9/10-12 at Harmony Park in Minnesota has become an amazing outpost for the love and healing vibrations of increasingly far reaching positive energy poets and musicians and it is a blessing to behold. This year the stellar lineup offers Tribal Seeds, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Rising Appalachia, Sarita, The Nth Power, Mike Love, The Malah, Natty Nation, Yamn, Heatbox and of course Wookiefoot (plus lots more music, fun and activities). www.shangrilafest.com

MANIC FOCUS FIXATION
I was blown away last February when I first saw Manic Focus, so I am excited to see a return. On 9/19 you will have a chance to experience and explore a world of new sounds ranging from sparking and popping hip-hop hits with brain tingling grooves to slinky synthetic punctuations with a smooth funky flow and who knows what else, all while dancing your ass off deep into the night at The Majestic Theater in Madison, WI! www.manicfocus.com

THRIFTY LIQUID
Billed as, “The future-vintage groove-blasting maestro who has stirred the souls and minds of the electronic music world,” Russ Liquid has impacted people across the world with his renowned ingenious compositional approach. This multi-instrumentalist draws from a crazy cool and diverse sonic palette and produces some of the most passionate and cutting edge live instrumental performances to be found anywhere. Mr Liquid will be appearing on a double bill with Thriftworks and the show features the Dragon House Dancers and special guest Filabusta. 9/22 at The Majestic Theater in Madison, WI and 9/26-26 at the Miramar in Milwaukee, WI. www.russliquid.com

FINESSING THE ORB
Emerging from the 1988 acid house revolution, The Orb is a testament to the full history and spectrum of electronic music. Over the last 25 years, they’ve had members come and go, pioneered a genre or two and released a great number of singles and albums while traversing the globe. And they are ready to bring it to you and show off the diversity and dynamics of what 25 years as a band can do on 9/24 at The Majestic Theater in Madison, WI. Also on the bill, Mike Carlson, Wyatt Agard and Umi. www.theorb.com

Ott

Album title: Fairchild
Record Label: Ottsonic
Rating: 9

Distant warbles of dubtastic goodness are chopped expertly into blissful bubbles of electronica and sizzled with splashes of multi-ethnic relish. Etheric vocals are found amid idiosyncratic wompy bass delicacies and a hyper surreal psychedelic undertow. After a 4 year wait, the English producer known as OTT, with help from a couple dozen or so musicians, has provided us with a wonderful new sonic adventure so we can all explore how to be fairchildren too.
