OOIOO

Featherland
Birdland Records
www.birdlandrecords.com

Japanese girl pop has come a long way since Yukiko Okada made the girls jump.  This love fair leads in an (in)direct line to the beach boy meets girl punk metal of X-Girl and the insouciant tribal prog of OOIOO.  The detritus of a mock fashion shoot inspired by Boredoms drummer and hornist, Yoshimi P-Wee blossomed into the strange hybrid known as OOIOO.  Yoshimi and her gathering of  avant-fashionistas indulges a particularly groovy sort of nervy ambiance - chock full of bird sounds, strange electronica, fun/banal lyric repetitions, Japanese chants and exhalations, stinging guitars, and a drum solo to boot.  OOIOO's novelty, earnest inventiveness, and natural propensity to rock makes Feather Float a delight.
